Funny Helper

I had posted a problem at UbuntuForums
I was sure that despite this being a problem with Linux Mint, someone will help as Mint is 90% Ubuntu. However, I can see that only one user tried to help. Well I have to say that he probably tried to best of his abilities, but either he is lacking technically or lacking somewhere else.

To install a package one needs to have admin privileges, in Ubuntu the common way is to use "sudo". Eg
sudo apt-get install <package name >

However, if we try this command without sudo, apt-get will give an error saying that it could not acquire lock on package database

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Looks like my helper forgot these basics.
You can also acquire admin rights by "sudo -s".
Please read my conversation with my helper, it really funny.

NOTE :: I have not got a solution to my problem !!
I thought that Ubuntu users really pride themselves for having the most responsive forums.

Ok, maybe I missed something, but that wasn't even funny.

Something that you might consider is that Ubuntu has attracted a great many, shall we say, less than technical users, who are possible Windows refugees and transfer Windows methods (i.e. only one way to do something) to their GNU/Linux experience.

In regard to your OO.org install, it seems you are running into package circular dependencies which can SOMETIMES be cured via using dpkg -i --force-all on the offending package, in this case the -java, which should at least allow the -common to install and clear the rest. The problem is usually cleared up, at least in Debian, by waiting for an update to the offending package.

Thanks for the tip, linuxfanboy. I will try this. Though I fear that forcing might break someother thing. In debian stable things hardly break, but his is Ubuntu world, here things break but the community is extreamly helpful and normally helps. I think in my case I have mentioned that I am a Mint user, so this is keeping some of the regulars from helping me.
